Things are not going well for the Carolina Panthers this season. Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons featured an announcer jinx from Mark Sanchez that perfectly encapsulates the team’s struggles.

The Panthers used the No. 1 overall pick on Bryce Young in 2023 and he started all but one game last season. But after struggling for the first two games of the 2024 season, Young was benched for Andy Dalton.

With Atlanta nursing a comfortable 38-20 lead, Sanchez and play-by-play announcer Chris Myers discussed Carolina’s quarterback situation as Sunday’s game was winding down.

“Do you coach him (Young) up? He’s learning from Dalton. I mean, what do you see as the — beyond this season for Carolina or later this season, even?” Myers asked.

“Well,” Sanchez began to respond. “I think he needs to watch how a true professional…”

We can certainly guess how Sanchez wanted to finish that sentence. We’ll never know, though, as before he had the chance to complete his thought, Dalton threw an interception, drawing a groan from Sanchez.

To be clear, Sanchez’s point that Young needs to learn some more under Dalton before reassuming the starter’s job is not any more wrong after that interception than it was before he threw it.

Still, it’s hard to imagine an analyst’s point having much worse timing than this one did.
