Joe Buck will call Super Bowl LXI for ESPN and ABC on February 14, 2027, but it might be the second most important thing going on for him that day.
Buck joined Jimmy Traina’s recently launched The Traina Thoughts Podcast on Underscore Media to preview the start of the NFL season. While Buck offered stock answers about being excited to call his first Super Bowl alongside Troy Aikman in eight years, he also shared some breaking news about the date of Feb. 14, 2027.
“My daughter Natalie is due on Super Bowl Sunday,” Buck revealed. “Jack Buck’s son, the little boy that was doing the World Series in 1996, his daughter is due on Super Bowl Sunday, yes.”
Traina expressed surprise that Buck is about to be a grandfather. But if you think it’s crazy that Buck is going to be a grandfather, just think of how his twin sons feel about being uncles.
“I’ve got eight-year-old twin boys. They’re going to be eight-year-old uncles,” Buck noted with a chuckle. “Uncle Blake and Uncle Wyatt, we can get in the sandbox together at some point. But yeah, it’s kind of nuts.”
“Every countdown clock that I see at ESPN, while everyone else was going, ‘Man, we got Super Bowl 61!’ That’s my countdown clock to being a grandpa,” Buck admitted.
Traina then asked the obvious follow-up: what does soon-to-be Grandpa Joe do if his daughter goes into labor right before Super Bowl LXI is slated to kick off at SoFi Stadium?
“I’m leaving. I am not needed in Inglewood, California. I need to be there (for the birth of his grandchild), right?” Buck joked. “I’m kidding. Obviously I will be there (at the Super Bowl).”
And just in case there was any doubt, Buck shared that he was at the 1999 MLB All-Star Game when his second daughter was due. So if he was willing to risk missing the birth of his daughter for an All-Star Game, he’s definitely going to be calling the Super Bowl.
“Trust me, this is my daughter. I’m not delivering the child, I’m not the husband, I’m certainly not the one giving birth. My presence is not needed,” Buck humbly admitted. “I will just send my prayers and my love, and then I will be there the next day.”
Let’s also not act like the due date is definitely the date the baby will be born. Chances are Buck’s grandchild will have a birth date other than Feb. 14, 2027. But if his daughter is in labor during the Super Bowl, Buck said he wants updates in real time.
“I am going to want to get every update humanly possible,” Buck said. “I will not be distracted, but I will have part of my heart in New York waiting to hear the news.”
