Jerry Jones has never been afraid to speak his mind, and no one ever accused the Dallas Cowboys owner of reading from a PR script when he talks to the media.

Turns out, the 82-year-old team owner can read and memorize a script quite well, as he showed Sunday during a surprise cameo on the Paramount+ series Landman.

Jones appeared as himself in the ninth episode of the show. In a scene with series stars Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Hamm, Jones talks about the importance of family and keeping work and life in perspective.

“Now I’m not saying I’ve done anything right, but I made my mind up a long time ago I was gonna work with my kids,” Jones said in the scene, shot in a hospital room where Hamm’s character is recovering from a heart attack. “And they’re involved in everything. They’re involved in my leasing, oil and gas, real estate.

“And so, when I got the Cowboys, I got it so that we could all work together. I thought I was doing it for them, but the one that got the most out of it was me.”


The scene called for Jones to display some emotion, and he delivered, bringing himself to the brink of tears. (Is it possible he thought about the Cowboys’ dismal 7-10 season to make himself teary-eyed?)

He did manage to get another Cowboys plug in his scene.

“I’m pretty proud of them Cowboys, and I’m pretty proud of the stuff we’ve done in oil and gas,” Jones said.

Jones’ performance earned rave reviews on social media, but many noted the team owner sounded as if he were speaking from his own life experience. His three children, Stephen, Charlotte and Jerry Jr., are involved in various roles with the Cowboys.

That authenticity led some to believe Jones might have even ad-libbed most of his lines.
