Ben Johnson won a Monday Night Football game with a third-string quarterback and still managed to spend the next morning on the phone doing damage control.

Speaking on the St. Brown Podcast with Lions teammate Amon-Ra St. Brown and his brother Equanimeous, Jared Goff addressed the postgame quip Johnson made at his expense after the Bears’ 27-7 win over the Eagles, insisting there was no malice behind it and chalking it up to Johnson’s knack for proverbially stepping in it whenever the media is present.

“Ben can’t seem to get out of his own way when he’s talking to the media,” Goff said. “So, I know there was no ill intent to that, but, you know, he seems to be a lightning rod for them. They pick up everything he says.”

Those comments come after Johnson guided 38-year-old Case Keenum to a win at Soldier Field, with Caleb Williams sidelined by a hamstring injury and backup Tyson Bagent in the concussion protocol. Asked afterward how he retooled his offense from the mobile Williams to the pocket-bound Keenum, Johnson grinned and reached back to his three seasons calling plays in Detroit, saying he had “a little history” with calling plays for “someone not so mobile.” He added that he had also never called plays for a quarterback who wasn’t a No. 1 overall pick, a stat that had circulated all week, before crediting Keenum for playing “lights out.” Goff, of course, went first overall in 2016.

“It’s funny, he messaged me, or called me this morning and was like, ‘Dude, you know that means nothing.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, dude, you’re good. Don’t worry about it,'” Goff added.

Goff made no attempt to dispute Johnson’s scouting report, conceding that his mobility ranks “probably the lower end of the league.” That doesn’t mean he’s letting Johnson off the hook, though. Goff said he’s holding a retaliatory jab about Johnson’s play-calling in reserve for the right moment, and once he fires it off, he’ll pick up the phone to assure Johnson it was all in good fun.
