Dan Fouts admires NFL running back’s ‘third leg’

NFL analysts might try their hardest to avoid accidentally drawing penises on the telestrator, but you still can’t overlook the accidental penis reference.

The NFL preseason might not mean much to the players, but it still means something to the broadcasters. One benefit of the NFL preseason is that fans get to hear Dan Fouts again. After parting ways with CBS as a game analyst in 2020, Fouts continues to call preseason games for the Los Angeles Chargers alongside play-by-play voice Noah Eagle. And Fouts had a notable moment Thursday night while admiring Chargers running back Amar Johnson.

“Look at how he uses that third leg,” Fouts said.

Excuse me, his what?

“That right hand to give himself a couple more yards,” Fouts added. “Setting up a quarterback’s dream down.”

Ah okay, that makes much more sense. Johnson did use his hand as an additional leg to keep his footing and gain a few more yards. Thank Fouts for the unintentional phrasing gaffe, but credit him for making a quick adjustment to explain why the audience was looking at Johnson’s third leg.

Interestingly enough, this wasn’t the first time the Chargers preseason broadcast highlighted the importance of phrasing. But last time, it was Fouts’s preseason broadcast partner, Noah Eagle.

“I’m not ashamed to admit that I go with the finger method myself,” Eagle said a few years ago while watching a Chargers player count everyone on the field to make sure they weren’t in danger or a penalty.
