The lovefest between Cris Collinsworth and Patrick Mahomes continues.
Despite the Kansas City Chiefs star’s putrid overall performance in Super Bowl LIX, Collinsworth isn’t ready to go back on his adoration. In an appearance on Up & Adams on FanDuel TV after the Chiefs’ loss, Collinsworth concurred with NFL fans who believe he is biased toward Mahomes.
“Honestly, I don’t care if anyone thinks I like Patrick Mahomes, because I do. I do like the guy,” Collinsworth said. “He’s been one of the most phenomenal players we’ve seen in the league for a long, long time.”
While Collinsworth and the NBC Sports team have surprisingly not called a Mahomes Super Bowl yet, the Sunday Night Football color commentator has developed a reputation as a Mahomes stan. He even referenced it in a 2023 broadcast.
“There’ll be people excited I’m not gonna mention Patrick Mahomes. I’ve been reading my Twitter,” Collinsworth said then.
Early that same season, Collinsworth readied NBC’s viewers for a Mahomes performance by saying “America is about to find out how good he really is.” By that time, Mahomes was a two-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP.
And while he defended himself this week, Collinsworth didn’t shy away from more Ma-homerism. He claimed that because Kansas City was so thoroughly dominated, Mahomes “probably couldn’t have been great enough for him to have won this game.”
Collinsworth believes Philadelphia’s talent proved to be so much better that the there was nothing the undisputed best QB in the NFL could do to affect the outcome of the game. Maybe he missed Mahomes’ three turnovers since he wasn’t calling the game?
The Mahomes love is so glaring at this point that it’s comforting to know Cris Collinsworth is at least aware of it and embracing it.
