Colin Kaepernick remains the most famous NFL free agent. Having kicked off the trend of players protesting racial inequality by sitting or kneeling during the national anthem prior to games, Kaepernick has been unable to find an NFL team willing to sign him.
While Kaepernick pursues his collusion grievance against the NFL, he’ll also be able to fill his time by fulfilling his end of a new seven-figure book deal with Random House division One World.
That’s according to this report from Page Six:
Colin Kaepernick has inked a book deal worth just over $1 million with Random House imprint One World, Page Six has exclusively learned.
One World’s headed by book world superstar Chris Jackson, who also publishes Jay-Z and Ta-Nehisi Coates. He launched One World last year.
One of Kaepernick’s biggest problems has been messaging. Indeed, that’s probably been the problem most plaguing the player protest movement, and it’s not the fault of the players. Being able to expand his thoughts and his platform out to book-length is a great opportunity. Kaepernick has always come across as thoughtful about his actions, and without being part of an NFL team, there’s less built-in media availability.
Plus, the events of the last year or so since his movement first captured the public’s attention are worth exploring. Surely he has thoughts on what has transpired this season, for example, with other players taking up the reins in his absence and the new President of the United States seeing fit to use his aptly-named bully pulpit to attack NFL players for peacefully protesting.
Kaepernick’s book is likely not going to be out in the near-term, but whenever it does see publication, it’s going to be interesting to see how much detail he goes into regarding the end of his tenure in San Francisco and his efforts to return to the NFL.
