Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills have one of the NFL’s best running backs in James Cook, but Colin Cowherd doesn’t seem to think they have any running back.
Cowherd was fawning over the Kansas City Chiefs on his Wednesday afternoon Fox Sports Radio and FS1 show, praising their ability to dominate the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football despite Mahomes’ below-average performance. The Bills, meanwhile, barely eclipsed the Houston Texans while Allen played like an MVP.
It’s just one week, but Cowherd was right in noting the Chiefs looked like contenders again in their season opener, especially with newly acquired running back Kenneth Walker. But he used the Chiefs’ win to make a point about Allen having no help in Buffalo. Which is very wrong.
“Mahomes is running a race but it’s a relay race and Kenneth Walker ran the anchor leg. That’s what Josh Allen doesn’t have… If Josh plays poorly – Lights out, they’re not winning a big game.”@colincowherd argues Josh Allen still doesn’t have enough help in Buffalo pic.twitter.com/42HQ4lYn73

“Mahomes is running a race, but it’s a relay race, and Kenneth Walker on Monday night ran the anchor leg. It was Kenneth Walker who was really important. It was the pass rush. And that’s what Josh Allen doesn’t have,” Cowherd said. “I love Buffalo, but if Josh plays poorly, lights out.”
“Best quarterback on the planet,” Cowherd continued, referring to Allen. “It all had to go right. Because he’s not running a relay, he’s running the 440 by himself on too many Sundays.”
Claiming Josh Allen doesn’t have a running back who can make an impact like Kenneth Walker was so off base that it got Cowherd community-noted. Because Allen doesn’t just have a capable running back beside him in Buffalo, he has the NFL’s leading rusher from last season in James Cook.
Allen is arguably the best quarterback in the NFL, but when he plays poorly, it’s usually because he makes poor decisions and turns the ball over. Things that can be detrimental to a team that relies on strong quarterback play. But the Bills do have someone capable of taking the baton from Allen to run the anchor leg of a relay race.
It’s one thing to have a wrong opinion; it’s another to be factually wrong like Cowherd was here. The good news for Cowherd is that he’s always willing to change his opinion when he learns new facts. Now that Cowherd knows the Bills have last season’s leading NFL rusher, he can reassess the help Josh Allen has.
