The San Francisco 49ers face a huge decision this offseason, deciding whether to give quarterback Brock Purdy a hefty contract extension.
While there are plenty of NFL insiders who are skeptical that Purdy is worth the up to $60 million per year he’s reportedly seeking, Colin Cowherd held nothing back Tuesday when talking about that issue.
On The Herd with Colin Cowherd, the host pointed to the Dallas Cowboys as a prime example of a team that overpaid for a quarterback, with Dak Prescott.
“We’ve seen with Dak, if you pay A+ money to a B to a B+ quarterback, you can’t have a legitimate roster,” Cowherd said. “I mean, look at the Cowboys compared to the Eagles. How many guys would even start from the Cowboys on the Eagles? Because you’ve been overpaying Dak for years and years and years.
“One of the reasons Tampa’s so good is because they’re getting a deal on Baker Mayfield. They’re paying him $33 million. I’d take Baker over Brock Purdy in a second…They’re getting a deal.”
Cowherd launched into his tier of quarterbacks based on pay. The first group, “I’m gonna pay you what I’ve got to pay you,” includes Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow and several others he said are worth $50 million-plus per season.
Then he said there are QBs such as Jalen Hurts, Sam Darnold and a couple of others, where Cowherd is “not offended if you ask” for $50 million a year.
So where does Purdy fit?
“Then there’s the third club,” Cowherd said, “where if you ask for it, I’m hanging up the phone. Brock Purdy’s in that one. It’s nothing personal. But we’re not getting the $50 (million). … It’s like negotiating for a new car. You can tell me that Civic’s worth $100 grand. ‘Well, we got rust-proofing, a sunroof.’ … I’m walking out of the dealership if you think that Civic is worth $100,000.”

“Nobody’s picking on Brock Purdy,” Cowherd continued. “There’s only one thing that guarantees you can’t win Super Bowls. Only one thing. Paying a B quarterback A+ money.
“I’m not like old guy yelling at clouds here. … Paying him 50 large and paying it early? I’m not doing it.”
Thankfully for Purdy, he’ll be negotiating his deal with 49ers GM John Lynch and not Cowherd.
It’s not the first time Cowherd has weighed in on Purdy’s contract situation. A couple of weeks ago, he accused the 49ers of leaking Purdy’s salary demand to the media, following a poor performance by the quarterback in a game.
