Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert is famously a man of minimal words. Without saying anything, Herbert just made his strongest public statement since entering the NFL as the No. 6 overall pick in 2020.
Herbert and pop star Madison Beer were caught caressing each other on camera at Chargers training camp in San Diego on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
The newly engaged lovebirds were so lost in each other’s eyes that they forgot they were sat in the middle of a football field. Or, more likely, they’re too in love to care. When brought to his attention during Wednesday’s First Things First, Chris Broussard thought he was being Punk’d.
“This could have led the show,” Broussard said. “This has to be a joke. Like, I mean, were they just doing that? Like, having fun? You can’t let that happen. I’m sorry. I get it. You’re in love and all that, but come on!”

Co-host Kevin Wildes tried to move the show along, as part of his “Wildes’ Weird and Wonderful” highlights segment, but Broussard told Wildes and the producers to go back to the clip of Herbert and Beer.
“I like Justin Herbert, but what?!” Broussard said, getting increasingly animated. “What is this?! I’m serious. What in the world is going on?”
Wildes said that the fact they’re sitting down is “killer” from an optics standpoint. “If it’s standing, it’s like, ‘Oh, you got something in your hair.'” Nick Wright chimed in that Herbert and Beer were “having a picnic.” All of this set Broussard up for a perfect dismount.
“That’s kissy-poo!” Broussard said. “That is not ‘you got something in your hair’ because it looks like he’s rubbing her hair, too, or something. I mean, that is footsy. […] Where’s [Chargers head coach Jim] Harbaugh? Where is he at? Mike McDaniel, I’ve been singing your praises all offseason! This is what you let happen? Come on. I’m serious. I’m not even trying to be funny.”
The show did move on to a conversation about which quarterbacks are under the most pressure for the 2026 NFL season, but Chris Broussard sent one more message to Justin Herbert before the commercial break.
“There’s one more guy that I just figured out is under pressure,” Broussard said. “The pressure just amped up, Justin! The pressure just ramped up! My goodness.”
To start the second hour of the show, Wright stroked Wildes’ hair while Wildes said, “Live from New York, it’s the show that’s just reminding you, nothing wrong with being in love.”
“Look, Justin Herbert has never performed well in a playoff game, OK?” Wildes said, referencing Herbert’s career 0-3 record in the playoffs. “Something had to change. Boom! Engaged.”
Regardless of whether Herbert finally breaks through in the playoffs this season, something has definitely changed: the media’s interest in his personal life.
Herbert and Beer first sparked romance rumors last August. Beer attended Chargers games to support Herbert, but they never publicly spoke about their relationship. Then, in March, Herbert gushed about “my favorite person of all time” on Beer’s birthday. He also co-starred in Beer’s “Lovergirl” music video in May. Now that Herbert and Beer crossed the PDA threshold — at work, no less! — all bets are off on reporters prodding him for more. The Chargers and Chiefs are divisional rivals, but Herbert may want to ask Travis Kelce for advice on high-profile relationships.
