Chad Johnson does not want to hear Bryce Young’s politically correct response to being benched.
Two games into his second NFL season, Young, who the Carolina Panthers selected first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, was benched. On Thursday Night’s Nightcap, Shannon Sharpe and Johnson discussed Carolina’s decision to bench Young.
Sharpe read Young’s statement on the benching which said (in part) “Obviously, not something that was great to hear. But I respect coach [Dave] Canales and I respect the organization. At the end of the day, we had a ton of drives, a ton of games and I didn’t do enough during that. I look in the mirror and I take accountability for that. For the most part, every snap hit my hands. I didn’t do enough with it at the end of the day.”
Johnson wasn’t interested in hearing anything else.
“I don’t want to hear that s***, man,” Johnson said. “I know you’re the quarterback, you’re the most important player — the most important position — on the field because you touch the ball every g**d*** play. But come on, man. Listen, you have to say the right thing. Bryce Young is saying all the right things because he’s in a position where he has to. You went to a f****** dumpster fire. It’s the reason they were the team to pick and have the first pick in the g**d*** draft. Everybody can see it. Your family gonna tell you the truth. Your friends are gonna tell you the truth. I’m telling you the truth. It ain’t you. It ain’t nothing wrong with you.”
Sharpe did note, “Some of it is, Ocho.”
Johnson, though, was only getting warmed up.
“Find me somebody out the Old Testament. Find me somebody out the New Testament that can come play for the g**d*** Panthers and make a g**d*** difference. Nobody. Jesus himself could come down here in them g**d*** sandals he be wearing. Ain’t nothing changing.”
He then turned the attention to a pair of previous Carolina quarterbacks, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, who have enjoyed success since leaving the Panthers.
“When Sam Darnold was there, they said it was Sam Darnold’s fault. When Baker Mayfield was there, they said it was Baker Mayfield’s fault. Bryce Young is there. They said it’s Bryce Young’s fault. Sam Darnold and g**d*** Baker Mayfield are off to m*****f****** historic starts again.”

Johnson then noted that David Tepper’s lack of patience hasn’t just been limited to the quarterbacks. Following that logic, coach Dave Canales might have felt that if things continue to go south in 2024, he might soon be on his way out of town.
“Frank Reich got fired in Week 11 — 11 games. David Tepper has a very short fuse and has little to no patience at all and not understanding that it takes time…I think Dave Canales is sitting back, ‘Well you know, right now, I think my g**d*** job is on the line because I don’t think we can win with Bryce Young,’ not understanding that elephant in the room is more than just Bryce Young. There are other issues that need to be addressed. David Tepper knows that. Mr. Canales knows that as well. There’s nothing Bryce Young can do.”
