Things ultimately ended well for the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, as they kept their postseason hopes alive with a 30-24 win over the Denver Broncos in overtime. But the path to victory was bumpy. A fan’s audible frustration at a critical moment shows just how bumpy.

After Cincinnati was forced to punt on the first possession of overtime, the Bengal defense responded well, forcing a three-and-out from Denver and getting the ball back into the hands of Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati offense. The Bengals quickly moved down the field and into position to attempt a game-winning 33-yard field goal. While Cade York had struggled some while filling in for an injured Evan McPherson, he had yet to miss this season on a field goal attempt inside of 40 yards. That changed on this attempt, as York pulled his kick and doinked it off of the left upright.

As the replay was being shown, announcers Kevin Harlan and Trent Green were quiet — as were a lot of the fans at Cincinnati’s Paycor Stadium. That made one fan’s frustration easy to hear.

“YOU HAD ONE F****** JOB,” the fan screamed. “G**D***.”

“Stunning,” Harlan then said, breaking the brief silence in the booth.

That seemed to be it for the Bengals, with the Broncos taking over with 2:43 remaining. But Denver gained only two yards on its subsequent. More notable, particularly given that the Broncos needed only a tie to clinch a playoff spot, is that Denver burned only 14 seconds. After the punt, the Bengals again quickly marched down the field and scored a touchdown to end the game.

The win kept Cincinnati alive in the playoff race, though a lot of help is needed. To make the playoffs, the Bengals will need to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 18, have the Kansas City Chiefs (who are playing for nothing) beat the Broncos in Week 18 and have both the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins lose one of their two remaining games. So, a lot needs to go well for the Bengals.

But if the Bengals do make the playoffs, we hope that they can make it a little less stressful for their fans. At least one would certainly appreciate that.
