Bears fall to Eagles after K Cody Parkey hit his sixth upright of the season, after NBC’s discussion of all the uprights he hit

The Philadelphia Eagles came away with a road playoff win against the Chicago Bears Sunday, and they did so after Bears’ kicker Cody Parkey hit the uprights yet again. With Chicago trailing 16-15 after a late Eagles’ touchdown on fourth and goal from the two-yard line with just over a minute left, Mitch Trubisky drove the Bears 33 yards to set up a potential game-winning field goal from Parkey. And Parkey made his first attempt, but it was nullified thanks to Eagles’ coach Doug Pederson taking a late timeout. On the second chance, Parkey’s attempt hit the left upright, then the crossbar, and then bounced out:

Al Michaels’ call of “He hit the upright again! That’s impossible!” was quite something. Especially as NBC later showed a montage of all the times Parkey hit the upright this season:

Cris Collinsworth’s “The odds of that happening again have to be astronomical” summed it up nicely. But it was also interesting how much time NBC spent talking about Parkey’s previous hit uprights heading into this:

At any rate, the Bears and Parkey wound up coming up just short here thanks to this missed kick. And it’s one that will undoubtedly be replayed for years to come.
