Kansas City Chiefs fans can’t wait. Not only are they impatient about becoming the first team to three-peat in NFL history, but they’re also eager to prove Bart Scott wrong. The same Scott who assumed that Josh Allen prioritizes MVPs over Super Bowls has a take about the Super Bowl — and it’s not great.
When discussing Jalen Carter and the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive line, the former NFL linebacker theorized that the offensive line might come back to bite the Chiefs. That’s because the Chiefs were forced to flex interior offensive lineman Joe Thuney out to left tackle as they tried to mitigate the struggles on the outside.
That’s thrust former undrafted free agent Mike Calideno into the lineup, and he’s held his own for the most part.
As the Get Up segment touted Carter being doubled-teamed 37 times more than any player this season (including the playoffs), Scott expressed concern over “backup” Trey Smith and Calideno facing off against the University of Georgia product.
“So, now, Jalen Carter’s going up against a backup in Trey Smith and Calideno,” Scott confidently said. “So, that’s going to be a lot to have to deal with, and if he can get consistent pressure, I’m telling ya, I like the Philadelphia Eagles.”

The problem? Smith is not a backup. He was a Pro Bowler in 2024. And according to PFF, both he and his center, Creed Humphrey, went 732 pass-blocking snaps without allowing a sack. That obviously could change on a dime come Sunday’s Super Bowl, but that wasn’t Scott’s point.

When Mike Greenberg tried to mention that Smith was a “veritable giant of a man,” Scott still wasn’t buying it.
“What’s a goon to a goblin, though?” he asked.
As you might imagine, Scott labeling one of the best interior offensive linemen in the NFL as a “backup” didn’t exactly go over well on social media, with notably CBS’s Kyle Long among those calling the Get Up analyst out.

Yikes. Trey Smith has been a top 15 guard for us in all four years he’s been in the NFL, playing no fewer than 1,230 snaps in any of those seasons#SuperBowlLIX https://t.co/ovGqQnKlwd

Regardless of what Carter accomplishes Sunday, Smith and the Chiefs offensive line are aiming not to be the weak link Scott’s making them out to be.
