Aaron Jones’ first carry of the day gave the Packers an OT win over the Buccaneers, even if Greg Jennings misidentified him

The Green Bay Packers came up with a home 26-20 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday, and did so despite quarterback Brett Hundley only throwing for 84 yards with an interception. Green Bay got it done on the ground, with Jamaal Williams rushing 21 times for 113 yards and a touchdown and Hundley adding seven carries for 66 yards, including a couple of big runs on the game-sealing overtime drive. But the game ended thanks to another Packer, Aaron Jones. who picked up 20 yards and the winning touchdown on his only carry of the day. And even though Fox analyst Greg Jennings misidentified Jones as Williams at first, Jones’ play here was still pretty memorable.

The whole Green Bay drive in overtime was about the ground game. With the Packers starting on their own 28 after the kickoff, Williams rushed twice for six yards, and Hundley then scrambled for seven on third down. After an incomplete pass, Hundley ran for 18 yards, then handed to Williams for nine more and threw a pass to Williams for another 12, setting up first and 10 at the Buccaneers’ 20. That led to the Packers subbing in Jones for Williams, though, and Jones immediately took a handoff, ran straight forward, saw the holes plugged and bounced outside for 20 yards, then dove across the goal line for the touchdown. But on the replay, Jennings identified Jones as Williams before play-by-play commentator Tim Brando corrected him:

“And Jamaal Williams, as he did all afternoon, made them play.” “Aaron Jones.” “Aaron Jones on that one, excuse me.” “Yes, it was Williams that did the job to get them to that position, and then Jones carried the mail in for the touchdown.” “I really like this young running back duo that they have here.”

That’s an understandable mistake by Jennings considering that Williams had been used heavily all game and Jones hadn’t had a carry before that, but the substitution was discussed before the play. (We can also get on Jennings here for “made them play” instead of “made them pay,” but that’s a relatively small error.) Good on Brando for quickly catching this and correcting Jennings’ error, though. And hey, while it may sting a bit to be misidentified, Jones will probably still be pretty happy with his game-winning touchdown.
