It’s been 20 years since the Montreal Expos relocated to Washington, D.C., and became the Nationals, but the sadness surrounding their departure from the place they called home for 35 years still lingers.
Gone but never forgotten, the Expos will have their story told in the upcoming documentary, “Who Killed the Montreal Expos?“, which will premiere on Netflix on October 21.
The documentary “takes a behind-the-scenes look at the controversial decisions, setbacks, and missteps that sealed the team’s fate,” according to Netflix. “Directed by Jean-François Poisson, produced by Stéphanie Thibault, and executive produced by Richard Speer, Marie-Christine Pouliot, and Nick Trotta, the film examines the shocking disintegration of the beloved Montreal Expos, a loss that still reverberates today.”
The Expos never won (or even went to) a World Series. Still, they have a history that includes three players wearing the team’s hat in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, four no-hitters, and 21 members in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. The strike-shortened 1994 season will always be one of the biggest what-ifs in Major League Baseball history, as the Expos had the best record in baseball (74-40) before the season was canceled. The franchise finally won a World Series in 2019 as the Nationals.
Some of the most iconic players in Expos history will appear in the doc, including Pedro Martínez, Vladimir Guerrero, Felipe Alou, Larry Walker, Dennis Martínez, and Orlando Cabrera. Also appearing are former Expos president and owner Claude Brochu, former EVP David Samson, and journalist Tom Verducci.
