during the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at the Georgia Dome on December 31, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Houston head coach Tom Herman is one of the top coaches on the rise in the world of college football, and he’s cutting off his regularly scheduled appearances on Sports Radio 610. Why would he do such a thing? It seems the way he’s been covered by some at the station has not been well received by the Cougars’ head coach.

Herman has had his brushes with the popular Houston sports radio station in the past, disagreeing with how recruiting subjects at Houston have been covered in the past year. Herman called up Nick Wright and John Lopez on the air in January over Houston’s contact with Texas A&M transfer Kyle Allen. In fairness, Herman may have been a little harsh in his stance, but it was clear the battle lines had been drawn between Herman and Sports Radio 610 in Houston.

On Thursday, it was reported Herman will no longer make regularly scheduled appearances on the station. Instead, Herman will maintain regular spots on 790 AM, which broadcasts Houston football games (this makes sense).

As reported, or suggested, by The Houston Chronicle, Herman’s decision may have been fueled by the latest story coming from a personality at Sports Radio 610. Garrett Heinrich wrote a story about nine potential job openings Herman should pursue at the end of the season. In promoting his story, Heinrich tagged Herman’s official Twitter account on Twitter.

Was that a little bit trolly? Probably. You can see why it might cause a coach like Herman, who is employed by Houston getting ready for the season and hoping to keep recruiting ties in good shape where he is, might get upset about this though. But cutting off the biggest sports outlet in the Houston area is clearly not something Herman seems too concerned about, much to the chagrin of the station’s hosts.

“My opinion on this – I do think it’s short-sighted,” afternoon drive time host Sean Pendergast said. “This is a show that has numerically speaking, our show, has the biggest audience in town and has for a long, long time. It seems peculiar that you wouldn’t want to do an interview.”

The thing is, in this day and age, and with what Herman has already accomplished, he doesn’t need air time on Sports Radio 610. Not now, at least.
