As we enter the final stretch of the ACC regular season, the conference title race is coming down to the bitter rivalry between Duke and North Carolina. Both sit atop the standings with matching 12-3 records, with critical head-to-head matchup looming.
While Duke enjoyed a strong season last year, advancing to the ACC Tournament finals, their NCAA Tournament run ended abruptly in the second round. This fueled top rookie coach Jon Scheyer to push the team to peak in the season’s final months. The team has responded, winners of five straight and eight of their last nine.
UNC Seeks Rebound Season
For rivals North Carolina, the trajectory has been less linear. Despite being unranked for stretches, a strong February has put them neck and neck with Duke. After a disappointing first-round exit last March, UNC now looks to punctuation Hubert Davis’ second season at the helm with a deep NCAA run.
ACC Showdowns Loom Large
With the regular season drawing to a close, both Duke and UNC’s NCAA seeding will hinge on a daunting slate of ACC games. Duke travels to Wake Forest before closing at home against Virginia and UNC. The Virginia matchup is especially key, as the Cavs are among four ACC teams projected to make the Dance.
As Duke aims to improve on last year’s five seed, quality wins over UNC and Virginia down the stretch could be the difference in earning a two or three seed this March. Given the parity atop college basketball this year, a favorable bracket path could prove vital.
Charlotte is First/Second Round Site
Adding intrigue, the opening weekend of March Madness will be played in North Carolina’s backyard: Charlotte’s Spectrum Center. With Tobacco Road rivals Duke and UNC potential contenders for the ACC’s highest seeds, having a de facto home arena for their first two contests could provide a vital boost.
Trusting Scheyer’s Vision
Entering Year Two together, Duke players have embraced the vision of Scheyer. “I think these guys have shown incredible toughness, ” Scheyer remarked. “When things don’t go your way, you find out about people and the way they respond. And all these guys, man, they’ve responded at different times throughout the season.”
Riding high from a 16-point thumping of Miami, Duke plays with the look of team hitting its stride when it matters most.
North Carolina Sports Betting Market Emerging
Finally, an intriguing off-court development has emerged in 2023 – legal North Carolina sports betting. As Duke and UNC battle for AC and NCAA supremacy, sports fans can now legally wager on games. The North Carolina sports betting market launched in January, with numerous sportsbooks offering North Carolina sports betting apps.
With intense Tobacco Road matchups set for March, interest in downloading and funding these new apps continues to surge. As rivalries meets high stakes, the debut basketball betting season promises to raise the excitement level even higher.
