De’Andre Johnson will be familiar to viewers of Netflix’s Last Chance U, as the former Florida State quarterback (who was dismissed from that program after footage of him punching a woman at a bar emerged) was heavily featured in last year’s second season on East Mississippi Community College. He transferred to Florida Atlantic in December, which drew blowback for FAU head coach Lane Kiffin, and was in the mix to be the Owls’ starter, but eventually lost out to Daniel Parr. And now it’s emerged that he was hospitalized last week with what his father said were blood clots in his arm that required surgery, as per FAUOwlAccess.com’s Chuck King:
The father of FAU quarterback De’Andre Johnson wrote in a Facebook post that his son was hospitalized with blood clots in his arm – a condition that required surgery.
Johnson was admitted to the hospital on Thursday with a medical condition that FAU coach Lane Kiffin called “pretty scary.” As of Monday afternoon Johnson was still hospitalized.
FAU did not release an update on Johnson’s recovery. The condition has placed Johnson’s ability to return this season in question.

That’s scary indeed. It meant that Johnson didn’t travel with the team to Wisconsin this week (they lost to the Badgers 31-14 Saturday, and then remained in Madison through Wednesday thanks to Hurricane Irma’s aftermath before heading back to Boca Raton), and it means that his future with the team isn’t known. Despite being the backup, he did play in their season-opening loss to Navy, rushing four times for 31 yards and attempting three passes, completing two for five yards and having a third intercepted. We’ll see if more information comes out on his condition.
