Remember that heartwarming viral image on social media last month, showing NBA star Victor Wembanyama giving his game-worn jersey to a young fan?

That jersey surfaced on a collectibles auction site this week, angering many fans and ruining what had been a feel-good story.

The Collectibles Guru reported Tuesday the jersey is being auctioned on Goldin, which reported the jersey will be listed for auction on Jan. 22.

Fans predictably trashed the kid’s parents on social media for profiting from such a warm moment. And Wembanyama himself responded. NBA Central posted a message on X saying, “This is crazy. The jersey is already up for auction.” The San Antonio Spurs star responded with a crying emoji.

Wembanyama has made a habit of giving young fans collectibles after games. The Spurs posted a photo and video of Wembanyama swapping his jersey with the young fan after the Dec. 27 game against the Brooklyn Nets.

“Best jersey swap ever,” the post read.

Even the most cynical among us probably didn’t foresee this happening, certainly not less than three weeks later.
