Ratings News and Notes

  • For the week of Apr. 17-23, the “2017 NBA Playoffs” helped TNT to be the No. 1 television network in prime time among adults 18-49 (1.51 million viewers within the demo; approx. 1.2 rating; runner-up NBC earned a 1.0 adults 18-49 rating) and adults 18-34. For the nights the network aired the NBA (Apr. 17-20 and 23), TNT led all networks (broadcast and cable) among adults 18-34 for all five nights, among adults 18-49 for three nights and among adults 25-54 twice. TNT’s live NBA game coverage for the week averaged 3.38 million viewers and 1.78 million adults 18-49, +16 percent and +13 percent, respectively, from the year-ago week (Apr. 18-24, 2016: 2.92 million viewers/1.58 million adults 18-49).

  • Atlanta-Washington Game 2 in the 2017 NBA Playoffs on Apr. 19 (470,000 viewers) experienced the largest year-to-year increase for an NBA-TV telecast among the three that aired on the league-owned channel from Apr. 18-20 — up 14 percent from Charlotte-Miami Game 2 (Apr. 20, 2016: 411,000 viewers). Atlanta-Washington Game 2 matched the aforementioned Charlotte-Miami Game 2 among adults 18-49 (221,000).

  • NBA-TV’s live post-game coverage after each 2017 NBA Playoff game from Apr. 17-23 — led by the late-night post-game of Golden State-Portland Game 3 on Apr. 22 (102,000 viewers) — averaged 53,000 viewers, up 21 percent from the yeae-ago week (44,000 viewers for Apr. 17-24, 2016).

  • Golf Channel’s tournaments coverage from Apr. 19-23:

    • PGA Tour: Valero Open (Apr. 20-23 afternoons; Golf Channel only): 402,000 viewers/59,000 adults 18-49 (-5 percent/+13 percent from Apr. 21-24, 2016: 422,000 viewers/53,000 adults 18-49)
    • Champions Tour: Big Cedar Legends (rain-shortened) (Apr. 22-23 early evenings): 168,000 viewers/31,000 adults 18-49 (+1 percent/+2 percent from Apr. 22-24, 2016: 166,000 viewers/31,000 adults 18-49)
    • European Tour: Shenzhen International (Apr. 19-23 late night and mornings): 47,000 viewers/14,000 adults 18-49 (-14 percent/-2 percent from Apr. 21-24, 2016: 54,000 viewers/15,000 adults 18-49)
    • Web.com Tour: United Leasing Championship (Apr. 20-23): 100,000 viewers/21,000 adults 18-49 (-9 percent/-10 percent from Apr. 28-May 1, 2016: 109,000 viewers/24,000 adults 18-49)
  • Opposite the NBA and NHL Playoffs on Apr. 22, FS1’s UFC events were not the only bouts to draw lower-than-average ratings. Both of the night’s Showtime Championship Boxing bouts — Charlo-Hatley (401,000 viewers) and Porter-Berto (468,000 viewers) — did not reach the viewership of the two most recent featured Showtime fights: Adrien Broner-Adrian Granados on Feb. 18 (779,000 viewers) and Leo Santa Cruz-Carl Frampton on Jan. 28 (587,000 viewers).
