The buzz around ESPN NBA analyst leaving to become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers has officially reached fever-pitch status.

On Friday, The Athletic’s Shams Charania said that Redick is believed to be the “front-runner” for the job during his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.

“Going into this process and right now, my sense is that JJ Redick, he is the guy around the league that everyone believes is the front-runner for this job,” Charania said.

Redick has been rumored as a candidate for the job since Darvin Ham was fired following LA’s playoff exit. Redick hosts a podcast with LeBron James, leading many to speculate that James is driving this hire, but James’ camp has refuted that notion. Regardless, it’s been reported in recent days that the Lakers are “intrigued” and that he is viewed as the “favorite” to land the gig.

If hired, it would continue a meteoric rise for the former NBA player. Redick quickly ascended the ranks at ESPN while making waves for his strong opinions (which some would describe as “condescending“) and pushback on ESPN’s debate show culture. He took over one of the seats in ESPN’s top NBA booth this season, though ironically he could join the guy he replaced, Doc Rivers, in not even lasting a calendar year before leaving to take a coaching gig.

That Redick has no coaching experience is sure to be a talking point heading into the 2024-2025 NBA season if he’s hired. Perhaps the bigger question is, if he does take the job, do he and LeBron keep podcasting?
