Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has handled enough interviews in his career he’s probably come to expect almost anything. That might explain how he provided a great, heartfelt answer Wednesday following a somewhat awkward but refreshingly honest question from guest reporter Jabari Smith Jr.
Smith, who just finished his second season with the Houston Rockets, is serving as a special NBA correspondent during the NBA Finals. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 draft, Smith has had some growing pains early in his NBA career.
That sparked his question to Tatum.
“I feel like this league is a lot of expectations,” Smith said. “What would you say to somebody going into their third year who hasn’t really lived up to the expectations that have been set?”
“How old are you?” Tatum asked.
“21,” Smith replied.
“I’ve been in that situation. Everybody else in the world that’s your age that is 21 is still probably in school trying to figure out what they want to do in life,” Tatum said. “We come into the league at such a young age and they want us to be perfect right away. This is part of growing up. You’re still growing up. I’m still growing up. … I think you’ll find the value in tough times, the ups and downs, just what life brings you.”

Tatum, who recently turned 26 yet already has seven NBA seasons under his belt, suddenly halted in his response.
“Damn, I feel like a real old person right now,” he joked.
Kudos to Smith for asking an honest, thought-provoking question, and for Tatum to quickly have a wise answer on the other end.
