Houston Rockets forward Dillon Brooks may have shocked the world Thursday night, but it wasn’t for the reason he thinks.
The Rockets had a nice victory over the defending Western Conference champions and their in-state rival Dallas Mavericks Thursday night. Following the 108-102 win, Brooks spoke to Rockets sideline reporter Vanessa Richardson and explained why they were so proud about this October regular season win.

“We wanted to shock the world,” Brooks brashly stated.
Hilarious. The 3-2 Houston Rockets just defeated the 3-2 Dallas Mavericks by six points in a regular season NBA game in October. And Brooks thinks they shocked the world. The odds of the world even being aware the Rockets and Mavericks were playing each other while Thursday Night Football was going on seems farfetched. Surely, in the annals of sports history, this win belongs right up there with Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson, the Miracle on Ice or the New York Giants beating the undefeated New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
Professional athletes undoubtedly need to use some unique tactics for self-motivation, especially when staring at a really long NBA season. So maybe Brooks talked himself into believing this was some bright lights championship-level matchup between the Rockets and Mavericks. But don’t assume the rest of the world is running on that same wavelength.
It was an upset. But an October NBA game shock the world? Come on. The world might be shocked by Brooks’ lack of self-awareness in that moment, but the world will never be shocked by an October regular season result, regardless of the teams or outcome.
