Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Dallas Mavericks kicked off on Thursday night at the TD Garden. But before tip-off, the Celtics decided to honor the late Bill Walton with a very touching tribute video that was shown on the ABC broadcast for the millions at home to see.
Walton’s passing last week at the age of 71 was met by nearly every big name in sports media sharing their own touching memories and tributes of the former NBA star turned NBA and college basketball broadcaster.
While the best of his playing days occurred with the Portland Trail Blazers in the early portions of his career, Walton was also beloved by Celtics fans for his contributions to the championship-winning team in 1986, which was largely Walton’s last hurrah in the NBA.
To pay their respects to Walton, the Celtics players wore Nike-themed Bill Walton warm-up shirts before the game. On top of that, both teams stood on their respective side of the floor before the start of the game as Celtics PA announcer Eddie Palladino kicked off the tribute for the late center.
“The Celtics mourn the loss of Hall of Famer, Most Valuable Player, and two-time NBA Champion Bill Walton, who passed away last week,” said Palladino. Bill was a champion at every level and the embodiment of unselfish team play. He derived great joy from basketball and music. And deeply cherished moments with teammates, friends, and family. We are proud to call him one of the greatest Celtics to ever live.”
Palladino then directed fans to take a moment of silence for Walton, which was then followed by the tribute video, which showed some of Walton’s greatest moments and interviews as a member of the Celtics.

Walton’s family was also highlighted in attendance at the TD Garden. Obviously, it is surely an incredibly tough time for them in light of his passing. But it has to be special for them to see yet another reminder of just how loved he truly was around the NBA.
