By all accounts, the upcoming NBA offseason is expected to be marked by blockbuster moves that will significantly reshape the league’s landscape. If Bill Simmons’ prediction on one potential trade comes true, it will undoubtedly be one of the most significant moves of the summer.
In an offseason where guys like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant are potentially on the trade market, all signs point to a contender or two making a run at one of the superstars.
Enter the San Antonio Spurs, who have been looking to add another star alongside second-year phenom Victor Wembanyama after bringing in De’Aaron Fox at the trade deadline last season.
Considering the young talent on their roster, along with the fact that they hold the No. 2 pick and the No. 14 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, they have more than enough to secure a potential blockbuster deal.
Simmons believes there is a chance that the Suns and the Spurs have already worked out a deal in principle that would send Durant to San Antonio. He relayed that possibility during a live edition of The Bill Simmons Podcast with Ryen Russillo after Sunday’s Game 2 of the NBA Finals.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already, and they just haven’t announced it,” said Simmons. “Like they’ve agreed on the specifics, and they’ll just announce it the week of the draft.”
Simmons admitted that this assumption isn’t based on any information from any NBA insiders or anyone around either team involved in this potential trade. But of the superstars available, Simmons believes that Durant is the far more attainable option compared to Antetokounmpo.
“It goes back to the Giannis thing; I think they’re just gonna trade for KD,” Simmons added. “It’ll cost a lot less, they’ll be able to be really competitive, go a couple rounds in the playoffs, but they’re also gonna keep the No. 2 pick and do it that way.”
We won’t have to wait very long to find out if Simmons’ instincts are correct. Any potential trade for a player like Durant or Antetokounmpo would feature draft picks. Considering we are just over two weeks away from the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25, the clock is ticking for the Spurs to figure out their future.
