Three certainties in life are death, taxes, and professional athletes dropping profanities in postgame interviews. The latest case of the latter came from Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves, as he and his teammates were getting set for a FanDuel Sports Network North postgame interview with Lea Olsen after a dramatic 131-128 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. But that interview was, indeed, already rolling:

That has Olsen start with a “Gentlemen” before Edwards says “Way to ******* hoop, y’all” to his teammates, seemingly not aware he was already on-air. Olsen then says “Gentlemen, we’re on live now, we’re on air now, Ant.”

As usual for these discussions, there shouldn’t be a lot of regulatory worry here for FanDuel Sports Network North. While FCC complaints can still happen over profanities on cable, they’re much less prominent and problematic than they are for broadcast networks. (And even there, it’s really only the highest-viewership things like the Super Bowl that draw actuallynotable levels of complaint, and the actual issue for networks is emergency alert tone misuse.)

Still, networks usually aren’t trying to air athlete profanities. But they are definitely a regular thing, including in these postgame on-air interviews. And Edwards is the latest to add to that lineup.

And while there usually aren’t too many consequences for the networks from aired profanities, there have sometimes been fines from leagues, including the NBA fining Edwards $100,000 for a F-bomb and S-bomb in a postgame interview with FanDuel Sports Network North in December. (That came shortly after they fined him $25,000 for profanity in a locker room interview and $75,000 for criticizing officiating and other uses of profanity.) So we’ll see if the NBA comes after him again.
