In a 162-game MLB regular season, there’s enough room for a lot of strange things to happen. Those include odd rally or home run traditions. One of the latest there comes from the Minnesota Twins, and sees them tossing a “HR sausage” to players who hit a home run. The team’s local broadcast crew on Bally Sports North got a question about that into a recent presser with manager Rocco Baldelli, and they got quite the answer, as they showed on their broadcast of the Twins’ clash with the Los Angeles Angels Sunday:
Yes… we apparently have a HR Sausage now.
No… we don’t know why. pic.twitter.com/KTFEzSsLsW

“It’s a summer tangy sausage is what it is, I actually looked at the package yesterday. It’s bringing us a lot of hits and runs and stuff, so I’m all for it. For anyone that hasn’t been following, it’s a substantial packaged sausage that [catcher Ryan] Jeffers has been carrying around in his bag and throwing at people when we score runs and hit homers. So I’m all for it.
“I’m slightly concerned as, I’m not even an adult, but slightly concerned as more of an adult than maybe some of the people in the other room, that the package is going to open up. And the thing hasn’t been refrigerated in many days. And there’s no doubt that when that thing opens up, whoever’s touching it is in deep trouble. There’s no doubt in my mind that we are carrying around something that is very, very unhealthy to the human body.”
That is one of the funnier answers you’ll see from a team figure on a team rally ritual. And the “I’m not even an adult, but slightly concerned as more of an adult” is a great disclaimer. This was also a terrific tweet from the Twins’ social team (who, it should be noted, once went through quite the ordeal to claim Twins.com), putting this out there without fully endorsing it. But we do feel somewhat bad about a nice summer tangy sausage potentially going to waste.
