The baseball writing community got sad news on Saturday afternoon. Scott Miller, who most recently worked as a contributor for The New York Times and had also written for CBS Sports, Bleacher Report, the St. Paul Pioneer Press and the Los Angeles Times, passed away.
Bob Nightengale of USA Today shared the news on X.
“Heartbroken to share: Baseball lost a giant. Scott Miller @ScottMillerBbl was a brilliant writer and an even better human,” Nightengale said. “His gift for storytelling embodied his kind soul and heart. I loved him, and so did all blessed to know him. Please keep Kim, Gretchen, and family in prayer.”

As a testament to how respected Miller was in the industry, several prominent MLB writers offered their condolences and paid tribute to Miller’s legacy.
This is so awful. Scott Miller was as nice of a guy as you’d find in the press box — and a very talented writer to boot. A sad, sad day. https://t.co/5CAoOZLYPP

That’s heartbreaking. He was a friendly and talented man.

This is devastating news. Just had a conversation with Scott about his recently released book about managers. So kind. So knowledgeable. Just a fantastic all-around human being. https://t.co/UXYklQepIo

Scott was one of the best dudes to have around the press box. Not only was he a damn good baseball writer, he was a generous person. Appreciated his wisdom and kindness. RIP https://t.co/clTgQj13ip

Scott was truly one of the kindest people in the business. When I was first starting out as a baseball writer, Scott was one of the very first people to make me feel welcome and like I belonged. That became a 10+ year friendship I’ll always treasure. He will be missed terribly. https://t.co/M2VDGZCUi8

All those words. Such a great guy and a wonderful friend, in addition to being a fabulous reporter and writer. So sad.

Scott was my press box neighbor, a friend, and a kind, funny person. His excellent writing and reporting was a beacon to us all. He kept optimism and humor throughout his cancer diagnosis and still came to the ballpark until recently. I hate everything about this news. https://t.co/w28VPSgJ4V

Scott Miller’s new book on managers, “Skipper,” is a must-read. And the final few years of the NYT Sports dept was made so much richer by Scott’s stories. Here’s his NYT archive. His skills, respect and love for the game come through: https://t.co/50WD45cVre

Miller was also an author. He penned Skipper: Why Baseball Managers Matter and Always Will, which was released in May.
