Given the amount of times we call out an announcer jinx here at Awful Announcing, it’s only fair that we give credit where it’s due when a bold call goes oh so right.
Ahead of Monday night’s game between the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, SNY color commentator Ron Darling made a call.
“I’m going to do something a little different today,” Darling said as Braves starting pitcher Bryce Elder stepped to the mound. “Usually I talk about the pitcher, his stuff, whatever. Today, I’m going to discuss that I think Brett Baty, one of the few Mets who hasn’t really gotten going offensively of late, I think he matches up beautifully against Elder. He’s my pick to click tonight.”
It barely took any time at all for Darling’s prediction to be proven correct.
Baty stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the first inning, and sent the very first pitch he saw out of the park for a grand slam.
“Ronnie’s pick to click!” Gary Cohen exclaimed in his home run call.
