While Saturday was a good day for the New York Yankees, who earned a much-needed win over the Houston Astros, the day at Yankee Stadium didn’t go nearly as well for one of the franchise’s all-time greats, Mariano Rivera.
Rivera was on hand to celebrate the 25-year anniversary of New York’s 2000 World Series-winning team. Before the game, the 55-year-old Rivera took part in the Old-Timers’ Day game. While playing, Rivera suffered an injury. During the game between the Astros and Yankees, fellow Yankee legends Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte shared updates on Rivera.
Clemens joined Suzyn Waldman and Dave Sims on New York’s radio broadcast. While in the booth, Clemens broke news of the injury’s severity.
“It was a fun day until we just heard about Mariano,” Clemens said. “Mariano hurt his Achilles.”

Both Waldman and Sims were saddened by Rivera’s injury.
“We all thought it was a hamstring. But I think it’s a little worse than that.”
“It popped, you think?” Sims asked.
“I think so,” Clemens replied. “I think he’s at the hospital now.”
Clemens then pressed Waldman and Sims on changing the name of the game.
“I told ’em, I’m gonna put you two in charge. It’s no longer an Old-Timers Game. We’re not that old. It’s an Alumni Game.”
Waldman, meanwhile, offered her theory on when Rivera might have been hurt.
“He wanted to hit,” Waldman said. “I bet it was when he was batting. Because he wanted to hit. He ran down to first base.”
“That’s terrible news,” Sims said.
Later, during a much more enjoyable trip to the booth, Andy Pettitte shared more details.
Despite Waldman’s concerns, Rivera’s injury did not come while batting.
“It was just a freak accident,” Pettitte said. “It was just a fly ball and he just kind of flinched to go at it. Right when he did, he said he felt it pop.”

Pettitte continued.
“Terrible,” he said. “But he was alright. He was alright. Thank God it wasn’t too serious.”
