Rob Manfred, Commissioner of the MLB Syndication: Arizona Republic

While some believe Bryce Harper should be reprimanded for his reported clubhouse interaction with Rob Manfred, Major League Baseball’s commissioner is shrugging it off.

Dan Patrick called it embarrassing. Stephen A. Smith claimed Harper deserves to be suspended. Friday morning, Manfred was asked about the confrontation and he downplayed it, believing the incident has been blown out of proportion.

“I think more has been made out of this than needs to be made out of it,” Manfred told reporters after announcing Wrigley Field will host the 2027 MLB All-Star Game. “Bryce expressed his views. At the end of the meeting, we shook hands and went our separate ways. Not all that significant.”

Earlier this week, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Harper told Manfred to “get the f*** out of our clubhouse” during a meeting with the MLB commissioner meant to improve player relations. The hour-long meeting reportedly got heated after Harper felt Manfred was broaching the topic of economics to discuss the potential need for a salary cap.

There is a growing belief that there will be a work stoppage after the 2026 MLB season, with a salary cap expected to be the main point of contention. Maybe Harper could have taken a more professional approach to relaying the players’ disdain for any salary cap-related conversations. But Stephen A. Smith’s take that a player confronting the commissioner over the biggest sticking point in their labor negotiations warrants a suspension is ridiculous.

Manfred taking Smith’s advice and suspending Harper would only further divide between the MLB Players Association and the owners. Credit MLB’s commissioner for recognizing the better path to easing tensions between the union and owners is by downplaying this incident, not lighting it on fire with a suspension.
