Phillies Aaron Nola reacts to fart Photo credit: Devan Kaney

With a commanding division lead over the New York Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies appear to feel very loose on and off the field.

So loose that someone in the Phillies clubhouse was comfortable letting one loose while Aaron Nola was speaking to reporters after he shut the Mets out for six innings Monday night.

Despite pitching through the worst season of his career, Nola was undeterred while facing a Mets lineup featuring Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso. And he took that same poise into the clubhouse after the game, when he was unbothered by a teammate farting near his postgame press conference.

The toot garnered plenty of laughter. Because everyone in Philly is feeling good about the Phillies ‘ eight-game lead over the Mets with 18 left to play. The Mets might be able to blow a lead of that sort, see 2007 and 7.5 games with 17 left to play, but they don’t look like a team capable of closing the gap.

Nola wouldn’t tell reporters who he thought the tooter was, but he appears to know the answer. Tuesday afternoon, WIP’s Devan Kaney reported the culprit is known inside the clubhouse. More importantly, Kaney’s source forecasted that the Phillies tooter has more gas in the tank. Meaning, everyone should be on the lookout for more postgame clubhouse farts.

And people complain journalism is dying. A tooter is on the loose in Philadelphia, and this is just the type of reporting sports fans need and deserve.
