While the New York Mets haven’t given their fans much joy on the baseball field over the last few weeks, Tuesday’s matinee of a doubleheader vs the Milwaukee Brewers produced a wholesome moment on the SNY broadcast that you can’t help but smile at.
In the top of the fifth inning, SNY reporter Steve Gelbs had a surprise in store for a young Mets fan in attendance at Citi Field.
As Gelbs was in the process of explaining the situation to SNY viewers, he approached Mets fan Antonio Veneziano to deliver the news: Veneziano was selected to be an SNY Kidcaster for a Mets game on July 22 alongside Gary Cohen, Keith Hernandez, and Ron Darling.

Veneziano was already blown away before that reveal simply by the fact that Gelbs knew his name.
Gelbs: “The winner this year, Antonio Veneziano, 12 years old, from Baldwin, New York, has no idea he won. But he does see me, and I’m walking down to him right now to say hello, and also to let him know. Hey, Antonio, what’s up, man?”
Veneziano: “Oh my god! He knows my name!”
Gelbs: “I do know your name. Do you want to know why I know your name?”
Veneziano: “Why do you know my ny name?”
Gelbs: “Would you like to be the Kidcaster with Gary, Keith, and Ron on July 22nd?”
Veneziano: “I would love to! Really?”
That was followed by Veneziano showing off his play-by-play abilities. Gelbs, Cohen, and Hernandez came away impressed.
We look forward to seeing Veneziano on July 22 alongside a Mets crew that readers ranked No. 1 in the 2024 Awful Announcing local MLB broadcaster rankings.
