The best baseball commentary can be both entertaining and informative, and Knoxville Smokies reporter Philip Stalzer found a moment to, perhaps unintentionally, inject some humor into a recent broadcast when a player hit a home run while he was doing a report about ballpark hot dogs.
The Smokies, the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, were playing the Biloxi Shuckers, the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, in their final game before the All-Star break on Saturday. The game was a “Christmas in July” promotional night featuring some odd food combinations.
Stalzer, reporting from the field, was talking about the Smokies’ “Grinch Glizzy,” a foot-long hot dog with neon green relish, hot barbecue sauce, and white onions.
As he was trying what he referred to as the “megadog,” Brewers prospect Josh Adamczewski hit a towering home run.
Instead of turning back to the Smokies’ regular broadcast team of Mick Gillispie and Connor Nelson for the call, the broadcast stuck with Stalzer and his hot dog. While Adamczewski was rounding the bases, Stalzer had this to say.
“This is a pretty good dog. I don’t know if there is a camera on me right now, but this thing is huge. If you are coming out to the ballpark to get yourself a dog, you might be one and done.”

When Gillispie finally got back on the mic, he had another good quip. “Thank you, Phill. He was lost in the sauce down there as Josh Adamczewski ripped one over the fence.”
We’ve all seen broadcasts interrupt an on-field report for a big home run. The Smokies went the opposite direction, letting Stalzer finish reviewing the Grinch Glizzy before returning to the booth. In the minor leagues, sometimes the best decision is simply to embrace the fun.
