The New York Mets broadcast team consisting of Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, and Keith Hernandez is widely regarded as one of the best commentary teams in all of baseball. But during Saturday’s game between the Mets and the Arizona Diamondbacks, the latter of the three-man booth made a hilarious math error that left him looking quite silly.
In the bottom of the first inning of the SNY broadcast of the game, the camera panned to two fans who had their respective throwback Mets jerseys on. One fan was wearing a Keith Hernandez No. 17 jersey. And the other was wearing a No. 8 Gary Carter jersey.
Cohen acknowledged the fans, beginning to speak about how both Hernandez and Carter had “C’s” on their chest during their time in New York as captains of the team.
Hernandez then attempted to add up the two jersey numbers but failed quite miserably…
“That’s right,” responded Hernandez. “That adds up to 15, doesn’t it? 17 and 8, that’s 15…”
Cohen then corrected Hernandez, saying that this actually added up to 25. And everyone in the booth began to hysterically laugh about Hernandez’s mistake as Francisco Lindor walked up to the plate.
8 + 17.

Maybe Hernandez mistakenly thought that the jersey on the left was a No. 7 instead of a No. 17. That indeed would have added up to 15. But that scenario would be even more hilarious considering the No. 17 was his own jersey…
At the end of the day, Hernandez hasn’t needed to show off his math skills all that much over the years in either his playing career or in the broadcast booth. He sure is lucky that he was one heck of a baseball player, and continues to be one heck of a broadcaster…
