If you go to a game at Wrigley Field and are cheering for the home team, no sound is sweeter than “Go Cubs Go” Steve Goodman’s 1984 song which plays immediately after every Cubs win. Of course, it’s the exact opposite if you’re cheering for the visiting team.
Unfortunately for Chicago White Sox announcer John Schriffen, that was the position he found himself in on Wednesday.
For the second time in as many nights, the White Sox carried a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. Both times, the Cubs came back to win, by identical 7-6 final scores, no less. The White Sox now have a 13-game losing streak, tying the franchise record set 100 years ago. This team just can’t avoid playing red-hot opponents.
Wednesday’s game came to a sudden end when Cubs outfielder Mike Tauchman hit a 1-0 offering from White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech over the wall, breaking the 6-6 tie and giving the Cubs a walk-off victory.
As the fans were singing along to “Go Cubs Go,” Schriffen was recapping a rough couple of games for the White Sox at Wrigley.
“White Sox had a 5-1 lead tonight. They had a 5-0 nothing lead yesterday. And not able to hold on, losing both games here in this Crosstown Series.
“To have to hear that song again,” Schriffen said.
“To have to hear that song again.”

Of course, it could be worse. As former White Sox player and manager Ozzie Guillen noted after the game, “Some people pay to get hurt.”
