This was a crazy weekend for sports, with the Kentucky Derby decided by a nose, the closest NASCAR Cup Series finish in history, wild NBA playoff action, Caitlin Clark’s WNBA debut and more.

So that might explain how most everyone missed Philadelphia Phillies color analyst John Kruk pondering behind-the-scenes drama on the reality show Dance Moms, but that really happened.

Kruk is famous for going off on tangents during Phillies broadcasts, and he had a really good excuse to do that in the seventh inning Saturday, with Philadelphia blowing out the San Francisco Giants, 14-3.

The NBC Sports Philadelphia broadcast cut to a shot of several Phillies standing around in the dugout looking at a tablet.

“Meeting going on in the dugout,” play-by-play man Tom McCarthy observed.

“That’s a very intense conversation,” Kruk said.

“I don’t think they can deviate from like the game stuff. Imagine that — let’s watch the Maple Leafs game,” McCarthy joked.

“Let’s watch Dance Moms,” Kruk suggested.

“The Reunion,” McCarthy added.

For those who don’t know, Dance Moms is a reality show that ran from 2011 through 2019 on Lifetime, and Dance Moms: The Reunion, just premiered on Lifetime May 1. It has a cult following. Apparently, Kruk is part of that cult.

“Yeah I missed [Reunion]. I wonder how I missed that,” Kruk mused.

“I hope some of those moms on that show weren’t like that in real life,” Kruk continued. “I hope that was all for the camera. … They’re nuts, every one of them.”

“I would think that they’re more like that than not,” McCarthy said.

“They’ve got some issues, man,” Kruk said.

As noted, it’s not like Kruk could tell fans something analytical they didn’t already know about a 14-3 game in the seventh inning. So McCarthy and Kruk had plenty of time to talk about other stuff. In the same game, Kruk shared a story about the time he played a baseball team from a Mexican prison in an exhibition game, along with other strange topics.

Fans loved Kruk’s and McCarthy’s stories Saturday.
