Recent reports about Ketel Marte have been unflattering and suggested that the Arizona Diamondbacks might be looking to part ways with the three-time All-Star in the offseason. Following Sunday’s game, Arizona’s Geraldo Perdomo spoke out against those reports and in defense of Marte.

Perdomo addressed reporters after the loss to the Colorado Rockies.

“I want to get something clear about one of my teammates,” he said. “I’m tired of this. It is gonna be for all reporters and all the writers. This is the second time something came out for Marte. Please, he just wants to play baseball. I don’t want to speak as a team. I want to be as a brother. Just leave the guy alone. You know, it’s been too much for him. You know what I mean? I feel he doesn’t deserve that and whatever happened in the past, it was in the past.

“We’re playing good baseball right now and I feel, we just want to have fun,” Perdomo continued. “And we just want to play. Just please, please. You guys have to stop. You know what I mean? Whoever’s writing, whoever’s saying s***, in the media or outside, please. We just want to play baseball. And keep that guy alone, please. That’s it.”

The reports Perdomo is likely referring to came from Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic and Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Those suggest that the Diamondbacks are frustrated with Marte in the clubhouse and, because of that, will seriously consider an offseason trade.

“The worst-kept secret in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization is out,” Nightengale wrote. “They will listen to offers on All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte this winter, knowing that while Marte is extremely talented, he can be a diva in the clubhouse, agitating his teammates and coaching staff. His detractors are still angry that he took a day off the final week of last season when they were fighting for their playoff lives.

“Though Marte’s house in Arizona was robbed the night of the All-Star Game, he took a vacation after the break, leaving the D-backs seething,” the report continued. “The team put him on the restricted list and refused to pay him during his absence, and aired frustrations in a private meeting upon his return. Still, there was no discipline and he was back in the lineup the following day.”

It has been a trying season for Marte. He had a visible reaction to a heckling fan mentioning his mother, who passed away in 2017.

As far as Perdomo’s frustration goes, while it’s understandable, it also might be misguided. Marte is one of the best players on the team. If reporters are hearing rumblings from within the organization that he might be traded in the offseason, they are naturally going to share those reports. It would be malpractice not to. If the reports are being embellished, we’d understand Perdomo’s feelings, but his comments would be better directed at those responsible for the leaks.
