It’s not often that you can get anyone associated with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants to come together, but the impending retirement of longtime Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow is one such thing.
In August, Kruk announced that this season would be his last, ending a run in the Giants booth that began in 1990 and became full-time in 1994. The seven-time Emmy winner first crossed paths with Duane Kuiper as a teammate on the 1983 Giants, and the two have since become one of the best booths in baseball, calling San Francisco games together for 36 seasons.
Before Sunday’s season finale against the Dodgers, several of that rival franchise’s top voices took some time to share some thoughts on Krukow and the impact he’s had on them and the game.

“50 years ago, we became teammates for a short period of time, the Chicago Cubs,” said Dodgers broadcaster Rick Monday. “At every turn, my friend, you have been the absolute professional, whether it be as a player or as a broadcaster. You have entertained all of us, thousands of people. To the Krukow family, thank you. Thank you for sharing Mike with us for all these years. It is truly a pleasure because every day that you come to the ballpark, whether as a pitcher in the Major Leagues or as a broadcaster, you’ve arrived at that ballpark like a 10-year-old in the stadium about to see your first Major League game. From all of us, remember, this is not goodbye, my friend. This is thank you. God bless.”
“Mike, man, what a gift you’ve been,” added Fox MLB announcer and Dodgers TV voice Joe Davis. “What a treat you’ve been for Giants fans, for baseball fans. I know hearing your voice, hearing Kipe’s voice together, we knew we were listening to Giants baseball. We knew we were going to have a good time. And listening to you. And anytime that I think about you from a personal level, I think about one of the first times I met you. I was nervous coming in my first year on the job. You pulled me aside, you said, hey, you’re here for a reason. Believe in yourself, be yourself, you’re gonna do great. And I’m sure you were just passing along one of the many nice comments you did to many people that day, like you always do. But it’s something that I’ve never forgotten, I never will forget. It’s not gonna be the same without you, man. You’ve been an absolute gift to all of us.”
“Mike, of course, congratulations,” said Dodgers analyst Orel Hershiser. “And secondly, we are going to miss you. San Francisco baseball people are going to miss you and all the broadcasters that get to be with you up there in the booth and get to see you during every series, and especially this serious rivalry series that we have. But you as a competitor on the mound, one of the best. Nobody tried harder. And with you as a broadcaster raising the bar for all of us of what it needs to be when you get into the booth as an ex-player. And then as a friend, we don’t see each other as often as we would like, but in baseball, as long as the separation is, is as close as we feel when we’re back together. We’re going to miss you. We’re going to miss you a lot, Mike, and especially me. You take care.”
Appreciation and tributes have been pouring in from all over the baseball world. Longtime announcer Bob Costas recently said he hoped the Hall of Fame would change its rules so both Kuiper and Krukow could be inducted together after winning the Ford C. Frick Award as a duo.
