We’ve seen our fair share of announcer jinxes over the years but rarely have we ever seen an announcer jinx himself or herself. Yet that’s what happened to Jenny Cavnar of the Oakland A’s on Thursday during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Cavnar, who calls A’s road games as the team’s primary announcer, had some fun with Siri’s last name, as you can imagine pretty much everyone calling Rays games does at one point or another. However, it was Siri and the Rays who were the last ones laughing.
With Oakland leading 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth and all world reliever Mason Miller on the mound, it was looking bleak for Tampa Bay. As Siri swung and missed at the first pitch, Cavnar was already taking a victory lap by saying “Hey Siri, it’s not your night.”
Unfortunately for her and A’s fans watching, Siri took Miller deep on the very next pitch. And maybe Cavnar realized the awkwardness of the moment with her unenthusiastic call of the home run. Even worse for Oakland, they would go on to lose 6-5 to the Rays in 12 innings.

If you’re going to make jokes like that, a one-run game in the bottom of the ninth inning when one swing can totally transform the outcome is probably not the time to do so because of precisely this possibility. But besides that point, Siri had already homered once in the game in the second inning… so it was already somewhat his night to begin with? Also, it was an afternoon game.
Either way, once those words were spoken, there was only one possible outcome. Next time, maybe Cavnar should be overly complimentary of the opposition and just see what happens.
