Angie Mentink has been a long-time anchor and host on Root Sports Northwest. On Wednesday night, she announced that she has breast cancer:
Talk about ungrateful, after everything I did for my boobs, today I find out they are trying to kill me. Yeah so ummm I have #breastcancer
— Angie Mentink (@AngieMentink) September 7, 2017
It certainly took a lot of people by surprise and it led to an outpouring of support:
Oh no. Thinking about you, wishing you the best, and knowing you are going to beat this thing.

Angie, from the entire Mariners organization, you're in our thoughts. Knowing you, cancer doesn't stand a chance.

Angie, you're in my thoughts — and you're tough as hell. You will beat this.

Your boobs may be ungrateful, but we are grateful to have you in our lives. Let's teach them a lesson! I'm right beside you through this.

That was just a small sampling. She also mentioned her diagnosis on the air. But after going through the tweets, Mentink responded:
It is hard to watch this game through tears-I am overwhelmed-You have made me so happy on a sad day. Thank you @ROOTSPORTS_NW and @Mariners

Mentink has been with Root Sports dating back to 1997 when it was known as Fox Sports Northwest and stayed when it changed ownership from Fox to DirecTV and eventually AT&T. She also was seen on Fox Sports Detroit when the channel aired a nightly sports news program. As you can see from the reaction, she’s built a loyal following.
In addition to hosting the Mariners broadcasts on Root Sports, Mentink has also covered the Seahawks for the channel.
There’s no word on whether Mentink will continue her on-air work on Root Sports when she starts treatment for her cancer, but she certainly will be in everyone’s thoughts.
Mentink has certainly dealt a tough hand, but she’ll have the support of viewers, the Mariners, Root Sports and her family over the next few months. Hopefully, she’ll be able to beat the cancer and continue to be on the air for many years to come.
