Some of the greatest slip-ups in broadcasting have come from people who thought they were off the air, and New York Mets’ color commentator Keith Hernandez (seen at right above) gave us one of those Monday night during the Mets’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sportsnet New York came back (at least for audio) from a commercial early to Gary Cohen and Hernandez discussing the Miami Marlins – Washington Nationals game and Nationals starter Tanner Roark’s third-inning exit, with Cohen saying “7-7 in the bottom of the ninth, Roark got knocked out in the third inning,” Hernandez chiming in with “Roark’s been getting his tits lit,” and Cohen adding “Yeah, he really has.”
As Deadspin’s Emma Baccellieri wrote, this raises a number of questions:
Roark was knocked out in the third inning tonight after giving up six runs, after giving up seven runs in five innings last week. It is not immediately clear if such numbers meet the standard for getting one’s tits lit, as such a standard could not be identified at the time of this writing.
Please contact tips@deadspin.com if you have any information about when one reaches the point of lit tits.
At any rate, Keith Hernandez remains as colorful in the booth as he was on Seinfeld:
