The scoreboard at BC Place, home stadium of the CFL’s BC Lions, has raised the profile of CFL referee Ben Major this season.
BC hosted the Toronto Argonauts on Friday night. In the second quarter, Lions punter Stefan Flintoft kicked the scoreboard, which hangs over the field of play.
If that sounds familiar to you, it should. Roughly four weeks before Friday’s game, BC was hosting the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. A Flintoft punt hit off of the scoreboard in that game, prompting Major to matter-of-factly state, “The kick hit the scoreboard — which is pretty odd. We’re going to redo everything.”
After Flintoft’s punt on Friday, the referee announced what happened. The referee, once again, was Major, who noted the déjà vu in his announcement.
“The kick hit the scoreboard — again,” Major said. Much like the first time, the humor of the situation was not lost on the official. Major had a big smile on his face and even began to chuckle before finishing the announcement. “It’s third down.”
We got the sequel on Friday night.
Once again, ref Ben Major made the announcement.

Evidently, it’s not that weird.
