Scottie Scheffler was unrelenting in his path to a fourth career major victory.
The world’s top-ranked golfer provided little drama en route to a four-stroke win at The Open Championship on Sunday in Northern Ireland. Scheffler’s win was never in doubt, holding a lead of several strokes going into the final round and not letting his foot off the gas. Even his final round playing partner, Haotong Li, told reporters after the third round that it was likely the rest of the field was playing for second place on Sunday.
Play for second they did.
And Scheffler’s dominance had one Golf Channel analyst speculating that he could eventually surpass Tiger Woods’ accomplishments should this career trajectory continue. Appearing on Live From The Open after Scottie slammed the door on Sunday’s tournament, Golf Channel analyst Paul McGinley made the comparison.

“The secret sauce for Scottie Scheffler is between the ears. That’s where he’s at the best,” McGinley began. “I have not seen a competitor anywhere close to Tiger Woods as good as this guy. That’s how high the bar is. And I think as time goes on, he might even prove to be a better one. He might even prove to have more longevity than Tiger Woods at the top. Because, at this moment in time, it’s hard to see him getting derailed because he’s so stable off the course as much as he’s stable on the golf course.
“And it looks like he’s got that fine balance, as he talked about earlier in the press conference earlier in the week, between golf being really important and loving it and loving to compete, but also that it’s not the most important thing in his life. That is the sweet spot there, to not be so obsessed with something that it’s also still fun, and that he can leave it behind if it’s not a good day. And I really do think that this guy is going to be around for a long long time. And it’s hard to see what could derail him. There’s so many things he’s dealt with in life, as well as in his golf career, that he’s circumnavigated and got through the other side.”
No doubt, Scheffler is on a Tiger-esque run from a statistical standpoint. Few have ever reached this level of performance on a golf course. Woods, however, did it for quite awhile himself. Scheffler is still quite early in his world-class form by comparison.
There’s no question about his ability, however. Scheffler can be Tiger-like. But it remains to be seen for how long.
