Typically, the market for cars with almost 200,000 miles on them isn’t entirely robust. But when that car has been driven by a two-time Masters champion? That’ll certainly drive the price up.
Last week, CBS’ lead golf play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz was able to add a rare vehicle to his collection. According to a report by Adam Schupak in Golfweek, Nantz won an auction for Scottie Scheffler’s 2012 GMC Yukon XL, which still has the golfer’s 2022 Masters parking decal on the front window.
Scheffler donated the car to Triumph Over Kid Cancer, a charity founded by his friend James Ragan, who died from a rare form of bone cancer in 2014. Nantz started the bidding at $50,000, a price that apparently held up until the car showed up at his house last Monday.
“I figure just driving this SUV to the golf course should lower my handicap by at least five shots,” Nantz joked to Golfweek.
Scheffler also made his mark on the car signing his name twice; once on the dash and another on the passenger side airbag panel. The car was originally purchased by his father, Scott, during the 2012 Masters that the Scheffler family was attending. The family’s original car broke down, so his father bought the car from Master Buick GMC in Augusta, Georgia, right down the road from Augusta National Golf Club.
For a golf nut like Jim Nantz, owning a piece of history like this is probably worth every penny. Unfortunately, this was not the car that Scheffler was driving during his infamous run-in with police at the PGA Championship last year. The world No. 1 appears to have been driving a courtesy car in the video of the incident, not the white Yukon that now sits parked in Nantz’s garage.
