ESPN’s preeminent NFL insider flexed a different muscle on Thursday morning.
Adam Schefter swapped his cell phone for a microphone and followed the featured group of Rory McIlroy and Keegan Bradley during the first round of the PGA Tour’s Travelers Championship for PGA Tour Live. But Schefty didn’t completely rid himself of his true passion, football. In fact, he kicked off his part of the broadcast analyzing golfers as only he could, by comparing them to NFL quarterbacks.

“Adam, we know you’ve put in a lot of work and prep for this week. Let’s talk a little NFL/golf comparisons. Whatchya got for us?” PGA Tour Live’s Myan Patel asked.
“Well Myan, I think when you look at this field of golfers and all the people involved in the sport, there are a lot of people who seem very similar in golf. Scottie Scheffler, with all his unorthodox movements, the way he hits unbelievable shots, we can draw the comparison between Scottie Scheffler and Patrick Mahomes. With the strange arm releases, the unbelievable throws, those two men, right now, could be compared…
“And then the other one that we have right now. We’ve got Dak Prescott, Tommy Fleetwood. Both men have played exceptionally well. Both men have tried to win the championship. We know Tommy Fleetwood has won overseas in Europe, still waiting to win his first tournament, maybe it comes here. Dak Prescott, trying to win his first Super Bowl. So you have a comparison to Fleetwood and Dak.
“And, of course, this is a week in which we have Brian Rolapp leave the NFL to become the new CEO of the PGA Tour. So we’ll compare Brian Rolapp to the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. A lot of people have talked about how Rolapp could, one day, succeed Roger Goodell, but now he’s over here with the PGA Tour.”
For someone has preoccupied with NFL news as Schefty, those are some pretty spot-on comparisons from a golf perspective! Few would argue that there is anyone better in their respective sports at this moment in time than Scottie Scheffler in golf and Patrick Mahomes in football. And both have their fair share of weird quirks when it comes to their mechanics.
Fleetwood and Prescott is another great one. Neither has won anything of note, but both possess the talent to do so.
And, of course, Rolapp and Goodell. Perhaps that’s an obvious comparison given the recency of the news, but Rolapp was Goodell’s right-hand man for years at the NFL, and now he has taken his talents to the PGA Tour.
If these heaters keep coming, Schefty might’ve just found himself a new offseason gig!
