Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has long been a top candidate to transition to a studio analyst role whenever he steps away from coaching. And on Fox’s pregame coverage of Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night, McVay may taken his first step in making this possibility a reality.
Over the past few offseasons, speculation has surrounded McVay and his future in Los Angeles amidst reported interest from several networks in potentially hiring McVay in a studio analyst role.
This interest has not waivered according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, who reported on Thursday that he believes McVay could command as much as $100 million from several networks should he make the jump to broadcasting.
McVay has made it clear as recently as last offseason that he is happy in Los Angeles and doesn’t plan to leave coaching for a TV job. However, he did join the Fox studio team hours ahead of kickoff in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, making it clear that he would rather be coaching in the big game while subtly flexing his Super Bowl championship ring.
“I love being here with you guys. Much rather be coaching, but this is a subtle flex on ya,” said McVay as the Fox broadcast team zoomed in on his championship ring. “This is something else. This ring, it’s absurd but what a great experience.”

The former Super Bowl-winning coach later made it a point to highlight both team’s strengths in a preview of the big game, outlining how the Eagles need to get Saquon Barkley going while the Chiefs need to let Patrick Mahomes be their “Michael Jordan” and control the game from the start.
“I think it’s an unbelievable matchup,” said McVay. “Two great teams. Offensively if I am Kansas City, I am saying ‘Hey, Mahomes go and be Michael Jordan.’ That’s what you have been against Houston. That’s what you were against Buffalo. You can win any kind of way. We’re gonna need that tonight. On the defensive side of the ball, we’ve got to be great tacklers on early downs. Earn the right to rush this guy. Be able to get Spags his blitz package going.
“On the opposite side, let’s get Saquon (Barkley) vertical seams in the run game. Allow Freddie Kruger, the scariest back in the league, to do his thing. And then defensively, can we be able to affect Patrick Mahomes with a four-man rush? Play loaded zone behind it, play sticky coverage. Let’s go, it should be a great opportunity to see these guys go at it.”

It seems like McVay’s passion for coaching is still there. But perhaps this appearance from McVay is a first step in showing networks that he is perhaps a perfect candidate for a move to television in the future.
