The Chicago Bears have shown an incredible knack for losing games in almost inexplicable ways this year, from a wild Hail Mary touchdown to a blocked field goal to terrible clock management.
So NFL on Fox analyst Daryl Johnston spoke for many Bears fans Sunday late in their game against the Green Bay Packers. The Bears led 21-19 and had a first down near midfield with 1:55 remaining. ESPN analytics gave Chicago an 84.4% chance of winning.
Yet Johnston channeled the inner fear of every Bears fan watching the game.
“Every Bears fan is watching this going, ‘Oh my gosh. How are we going to mess this up?'” Johnston said.
Less than five seconds later, Bears QB Caleb Williams completed a pass to D.J. Moore, who immediately fumbled. The Packers recovered.
“D.J. Moore with the catch — he fumbles the football!” play-by-play man Kevin Kugler called. “And it’s recovered by Green Bay. The answer to Daryl Johnston’s question is a fumble.”
“I didn’t mean for it to happen, actually,” Johnston said in an apologetic tone.

A few plays later the Packers kicked a field goal to take a 22-21 lead, but the Bears showed some resilience, marching 47 yards in less than a minute to set up a game-winning field goal. The win snapped a 10-game losing streak.
It’s worth noting Johnston did not rephrase his earlier question before the Bears’ winning field-goal attempt.
