Fourth of July and Labor Day are nice, but St. Louis Cardinals announcer Chip Caray is here to make sure another great American summer holiday gets proper recognition.
Amid another lackluster season for the Cardinals and a 5-0 loss to the Miami Marlins Tuesday night, National Chicken Wing Day was at least able to offer a source of excitement for Caray and analyst Brad Thompson.

“Today, a very special day in our country,” Caray noted during the fourth inning in St. Louis. “It’s National Chicken Wing Day.”
Thompson was very excited to learn about the holiday and quickly began thinking about the best place to celebrate after the game. Caray then started reading some fun facts about National Chicken Wing Day.
“27 billion chicken wings were eaten in 2013, I’m told,” said Caray. An impressive stat, but also odd that they chose 2013. Is that a record? Have we kept pace in the last 12 years?
“The chicken wing was originally invented in 1964,” Caray said as he continued sharing wing facts. If that’s true, we need to see a picture of those pre-1964 chickens. Did they have hands?
Thompson then asked Caray if he likes traditional buffalo sauce on his wings and while the Cardinals play-by-play voice didn’t want to say no, he didn’t want to say yes either. Think about Chip Caray for a moment and try to guess how he likes his wings, you can probably come up with the answer.
“I like them dry,” Caray admitted. “I like to apply my own sauce.”
“BORING,” Thompson said, before politely adding, “However you like them is fine.”
The occasional dry rub can be fun, but Caray didn’t mention anything about a rub or seasonings. Dry and plain so you can neatly take a dip in the sauce is not how you celebrate National Chicken Wing Day. At least Caray didn’t admit to eating wings with a fork and knife.
